King Physical Therapy and Fitness Call(724) 628-7288 Schedule Appointment

Questions, answered plainly.

Referrals, insurance, what the first visit costs you in time and money, and the legal notice about Good Faith Estimates that most clinics bury. The things people ask on the phone, written down before you have to ask them.

01 Context 01 / 04

What do people ask before starting physical therapy?

Two answers up front, because they are the two that stop people.

Most of these are questions we answer several times a day at the front desk in Connellsville and Scottdale. None of the answers change depending on who is asking, so there is no reason to make you call to hear them.

If you are reading a FAQ page before you book anything, that is not overthinking it. It is the same instinct that makes you read the estimate before the work starts, and it is a reasonable way to spend four minutes.

Two things worth saying up front, because they are the two that stop people. You do not need a referral: Pennsylvania’s Direct Access law allows physical therapy without a physician’s prescription. And you do not need to guess at cost: we check your benefits free before your first visit, and if you are self-pay, you get the rate before you book, in a sentence, not a statement six weeks later.

The question nobody asks out loud is what happens if you keep waiting. Usually this: the pain quiets down, the cause stays, and it returns every time you garden, travel, or sleep wrong, a little longer each round, until the thing you are working around has taught your hip and your other ankle to work around it too.

If your question is not below, call (724) 628-7288 ⟶ and a person will answer it, or send it with your appointment request and we will answer it on the callback.

02 Questions 02 / 04

Physical therapy questions, answered for Connellsville and Scottdale.

Twelve of them, in the order people usually ask.

No. Pennsylvania’s Direct Access law allows individuals to receive physical therapy services without a physician’s prescription, so you can book an evaluation here without seeing anyone else first. Some insurance plans still require a referral on file for reimbursement. If yours does, we flag it during your free benefits check and help you get one before it turns into a billing surprise.

The initial evaluation runs about 90 minutes, and follow-up sessions are typically 60 minutes. The first visit is long on purpose. Your licensed physical therapist needs enough time to test rather than guess, and hands-on treatment starts in that same appointment instead of at some visit down the road.

You talk, we test, and then treatment starts. Your licensed physical therapist spends the visit finding the cause instead of chasing the spot that hurts, because where it hurts and why it hurts are frequently two different places. You leave the first appointment understanding what is going on, what the plan is, and where it ends, through four named phases: Pain, Prime, Perform and Prevent.

Clothes you can move in: shorts for a knee or a hip, a shirt you can raise your arm in. Bring your insurance card if you have one, and any imaging or reports you already have, though you do not need imaging to start. Arrive five minutes early and we will handle the rest.

We are in-network with most insurance plans. Rather than publish a carrier list that goes stale, we verify your exact benefits before your first visit, free: your copay, where your deductible stands, and any visit limits your plan sets. You get those numbers in plain English before you owe anyone anything.

No insurance does not mean no care. There is a self-pay rate, and we quote it to you before you book rather than after you have been treated. One-on-one care also tends to mean fewer total visits than a clinic running three patients at once, so ask for the number and do the math with real figures instead of assuming.

Under the federal No Surprises Act, patients who are uninsured or who are not using insurance have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of the expected charges for scheduled care. Ask us for yours in writing before your visit and keep a copy. If the final bill is substantially higher than the estimate you were given, you have the right to dispute it. We will walk through the estimate with you before anything is scheduled, because a number you understand in advance is the entire point of the law.

You get a number at your evaluation, not a shrug, and we review it with you at every phase rather than letting it quietly drift. It depends on what we find, how long it has been going on, and what you want to get back to. What we will not do is guarantee a timeline before we have tested anything, or keep you on the schedule after you have cleared the standards that mean you are finished.

Whichever one is closer to you. Connellsville is at 171 W Crawford Avenue and Scottdale is at 109 Crossroads Road, and both run the same cause-first evaluation and the same four phases. The choice is about your commute, not about your care. If your week changes, tell us and we will look at the other schedule.

Both clinics are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7am to 3pm, and Tuesday and Thursday from 12pm to 8pm. We are closed Saturday and Sunday. The Tuesday and Thursday evening hours exist for people who cannot leave work in the middle of the day, so ask for one when we call you back.

Yes. We treat post-surgical recovery, older adults working on balance, strength and staying independent in their own homes, and younger patients including student athletes returning to a sport. The structure of the evaluation is the same for everyone. The plan is not: a 70-year-old rebuilding confidence on the stairs and a 16-year-old getting back on the field need very different loads. For very young children, call and ask. If a case belongs with a pediatric specialist, we will say so and help you find one.

No. Most people who call do not have a name for what is wrong. They have a sentence about what it has stopped them from doing: the stairs that suddenly need a handrail, the jar lid that has become a two-person job. That sentence is enough to book an evaluation. Imaging is useful if you already have it and unnecessary as a prerequisite.

The rest of the answers come from testing, not from a page.

03 The intake 03 / 04

Put it in writing.

Six short questions. A real person calls you back, usually within two business hours, with times that fit your week.

The people who end up filling this out are rarely in the worst pain of their life. They’re just done working around it, done picking the errand that doesn’t require the stairs. If that’s the stage you’re at, this is the part where you stop researching and start.
